Author-in-Hand Book Donations

Did you know:

  • 2-3 hours of reading per week during summer break is needed to prevent learning loss.
  • Approximately 2 months of reading skills are lost over the summer vacation.
  • About 6 weeks in the fall are spent re-learning old material to make up for the summer slide.
  • Kids who read books beat the Summer Slide!

The goal of the Author-in-Hand program is to encourage summer reading and improve literacy by putting one enrichment book in every student's hand each spring. The AIH program was started in 2005, providing John M. Marshall Elementary and East Hampton Middle School students with summer reading books. Since then, the program has grown to include Amagansett, Bridgehampton, Montauk, Sagaponack, Springs, and Wainscott schools.

Your generous donation will help to supply up to 1,600 students with summer reading books this year. With an average purchase price of six to eight dollars per book, our hope is to raise $12,500 to cover the cost of the books.

Since the program's inception, our donors have helped us provide over 20,000 books for students in our community. We hope this worthwhile program is one you are willing to support.

Please help give students the tools needed to maintain literacy and learning skills over the summer by donating to our program.
